Linen Roman Shade DIY

This week I created a knockoff Pottery Barn Linen Roman Shade. I originally looked at purchasing a roman shade for the dining room window however found that all the options in my price range were either polyester or a polyester blend. I have been trying to be more conscientious about purchasing items that are plastic or that create microplastics. If you want to learn more about microplastics that are generated from fabric you can read about it here.

If you are interested in learning more about how you can reduce microplastic production in your home, you can read about it here.

So, since all the roman shade options that were linen or linen blend were above what I wanted to spend, I went to my local fabric store and was able to find a linen cotton blend that was less than ten dollars per yard. I followed the instructions from the DIY Mommy blog to make the roman shade. You can read the instructions here.

This was a relatively easy DIY since I am comfortable with sewing. The total cost for all materials was around $30.00. I am very happy with the results and will probably use the tutorial again for other rooms in our apartment. Especially since this is a super cat friendly window treatment, and my cats have put snags and holes in the other curtains.

I will say the only concern I have about this project is it’s probably not the most toddler or small child friendly. I would recommend using a metal cleat for the blind cord if you have small children to keep the excess up as the cord is quite long when the shade is fully raised. I used what I had on hand, which was a small screw hook but it really does not hold the cord up and out of the way like the cleat would. Shop metal cleat here.

As we move on to the halfway mark this next week you can really see the other participants rooms transform! I love seeing all the creativity and sweat that the participants pour into their spaces. Please visit One Room Challenge.com to see all the participants projects, as well as the featured designers’ rooms and their progress. I always learn a new tip, trick, or DIY hack from my fellow participants, and I know you will too.
