Going Bold With Wallpaper: One Room Challenge Week 3

This week we have something really fun happening. I was tempted to change the order of the blog posts and save this one for later in the process as it really is a showstopper, but alas the Virgo in me decided to stick to the actual order of things and share it now.

If you have been following along, I shared in week one the mood board for this space, which included the dramatic feature wall. Originally when planning this room with the client the intention was to paint a mural on this wall. Murals are generally super inexpensive and can be fun if you enjoy painting and arts and crafts, which I do. I have done smaller scale murals before and assisted another artist with larger murals in the past, so I was totally up for the challenge.

The client was so in love with the inspiration image that she located the original image via Pinterest and decided to order the wallpaper from Hovia. https://www.hovia.com/products/retro-surf-wallpaper-mural-m/

Enter the conflict or should I say client. Totally joking, in fact I am aware that the client is reading these blog posts, not to worry we have a great repartee. While I am not opposed to wallpaper; the benefits opposed to a mural are obvious, it will look exactly like the inspiration picture, much faster to complete, and a more luxurious feel and finish. What I am opposed to is hanging wallpaper. To quote Shavonda Gardner “that is not in my ministry”. If you don’t know who Shavonda Gardner is your missing out on life. A fellow Taurean she is a queen at moody, curated, cultured and classic design. She is my role model and expander in so many ways; you can check her out here. https://sgstyleblog.com/ Enough with the fan girl rabbit trail, wallpaper is “not in my ministry”. Meaning there are some things we are good at and those that we are not, should be left up to the professionals. My client however thought it would be no big deal. I encourage her (well maybe demanded is a more accurate term) to watch a few YouTube videos of how to install wallpaper and let me know what her plans are after that. Cue the client calling in a professional.

My client used Thomas McIlvain of Aloha Wallcovering LLC. Alohawallcovering.com He did a fantastic job. The install went so fast that I didn’t even get a chance to capture him putting the first panel up. Thomas advised us that the wallpaper was of good quality, and he had no trouble with function or performance. He was done in about three hours. Totally worth the investment!

The finished product looks amazing. Since the rest of the room is white it doesn’t overpower the space and isn’t too visually busy. As we move into the coming weeks, I am so excited to play with the colors that are in the wallpaper and tie them into this space. Creating a cohesive fun look and my client being over the moon excited about it, is what I love so much about design. It really is such a happy space when you walk in. We joked that if my client ever feels bummed out or depressed, she can go into this room and it is going to cheer her up, its her new “happy place”.
